The Simplified Trade System (STS) Industry Advisory Council (IAC) met in Adelaide on 23 April 2024.

The IAC Chair, Mr Paul Little AO, opened the meeting and acknowledged the progress that had been made in simplifying Australia’s cross-border trade environment.

Mr Randall Brugeaud, Head of the STS Taskforce, together with partner agency representatives from the Australian Border Force and Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, provided updates on STS reforms currently underway. Members were also briefed by officials from the Attorney-General's Department on the progress of reforms to support paperless trade, and Treasury on nuisance tariff reforms. 

The Federal Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator the Hon Don Farrell, joined the meeting and reiterated his support for the STS reforms. He also participated in a roundtable and Q&A session with members.

Minister Farrell shared his commitment to incremental cross-border trade reform and noted that this was an important part of the government’s broader productivity agenda. The Minister thanked IAC members for their support of STS reforms to date, with their advice assisting government to refine and prioritise options for trade reform. 

IAC members reaffirmed their support for an ongoing, coordinated approach to cross-border trade reforms, noting that successful delivery would support Australia’s international competitiveness. The IAC commended Minister Farrell for his ongoing leadership of the STS reforms. Mr Little thanked the Minister for his participation in the meeting and members for their contributions before closing the meeting.
